Buy and Hold Is Dead: How to Make Money and Control Risk in Any Market

Save your money. This book is an extended advertisement for Mr Kee’s market letter and is therefore largely worthless. The book provides no evidence that his primary indicator, the investment rate, is anything other than an unsupported assertion that it leads the market. The reader is not able to judge for himself.

Kee’s book is primarily an advertisment for services provided on his website. He discusses the theoretical basis for his indicators and tools, but does not provide enough information for someone to test and duplicate his results. The writing itself is dense and filled with jargon. I was left with the impression that Mr. Kee was more interested in sounding intelligent than in writing clearly. Although Kee’s action matrix (predetermined actions based on specific support and resistance levels) is interesting, his trading strategies are primarily short term day trading or swing trading strategies that are suitable only for those who have lots of free time. While his web-based services may be excellent, the book is ultimately unsatisfying and of little use to someone trying to develop his/her own trading strategy.

Think about your investment advice for a moment in a broad sense. Everybody who has invested in the stock market has heard “past performance does not guarantee future results”. As soon as someone tells you that, then they tell you what their past performance was, in such a way that it sounds really good. This is how most of us get our investment advice. Now, imagine a white water rafting trip with a really experienced guide. The guide has “past performance” because they know the river. Yet it is a different sense of past performance. The river will probably be about like it was yesterday, but maybe very different from what it was ten years ago. Rocks can move around, the water can flow faster or slower, the weather could change suddenly. These and hundreds of other things you will never see will have to be taken into account by the guide. No matter what, the guide will not only keep you safe, but give you a great ride in the process.
This is what most people I know are looking for in the Stock market. Tom Kee calls this great ride ‘The Comfort Zone. ‘ It is indeed a wonderful place. Getting there was quite a journey. Understanding the tools that Tom provides (as well as things I never thought had anything to do with investing) helped me get there. I have purchased five copies of this book, one for each of the most important people in my life.

I started day trading a couple of years ago when the market tanked. I figured I could lose as much money for me as my broker did. I recently bought Mr. Kee’s book for some insight on the market. I was looking for a sound investment strategy without too much risk. I just don’t want to get killed in the market ever again. I want my money to work for me but I don’t want to “risk it all. ” Mr. kee seems to have the investment strategy that I am looking for. It’s easy to say that you won’t use emotion when you invest but difficult to do it without a strategy to follow. This book made me realize that I can do better than my financial advisor, taking the first step was the hardest part. I know that I’m not smarter than the market, but I don’t have to be, I just need a game plan that covers me if whether the market goes up or down. The key point to me was you have to be disciplined enough to take a small loss or it can turn into a big one, really fast. Instead of trading on hunches, I now trade with discipline and a real game plan.
Given the state of our economy, these lessons will pay dividends for years to come.

Tom Kee assists investors both institutional and individual in organizing their long term game plans for success. His Investment Rate is not altogether unlike Daniel Arnorld’s or Howard Ruff’s work in the area of demographics. All have something important to relate in this all to dismissed field. Where Tom adds extra value is in his trading ideas, chart analysis, and economic analysis that has a decided detachment from the usual Wall Street suspects interpretations that are self evidently sell side influenced. I value Tom’s work and use it as an aid in my various capacities as public fund board trustee, foundation investment committee member and especially as a proactive investor. This is a must read for all who wish to maintain a steady return on their assets in what will be a very difficult market environment yet to come.
